Newborn Baby Photography

Newborn baby photography is a challenging yet favorite task for those who love newborns. You have to be really patient shooting with newborns. All photographers have their own style of doing newborn photography. In this article I would like to share some Newborn photography skills that I have learnt through my personal experience. Babies in the age group of 0-3 months fall in the category of Newborns. Newborn Photography can be of two types: Posed or Natural.

Posed Newborn Photography
Posed Newborn baby photography is a challenging task for those who are doing it for the first time. Baby’s are delicate and their bodies need to be posed very carefully. Start slowly. But be extremely careful while posing the baby. Posed baby sessions are best to be done within the first two weeks of birth because in the first 14 days baby is sleeping the maximum number of hours in a day. It usually takes 4-5 hrs in this session.
Natural Baby Photography
In this type of photography you do not need to pose the baby. Usually it is easier than the posed session, since you have to take the natural shots of the baby. Its always good to involve parents in these kinds of shots. If you are a beginner, start with this rather than the posed baby photography.

#Tip1: Discuss with the Parents
The first thing before the shoot you need to do, is to have a meeting with the parents and discuss about the type of shoot they want, whether they want natural shots of the baby, or they focus more on the posed shots. Keep yourself prepared for both. Discuss about the shoot location. If shoot has to be done at the clients place, try and visit their place once before the shoot.

#Tip2: Get Ready with the Props
You need to carry all the required and sufficient props for the shoot. Various Newborn baby photography props you would need are:

  • Headbands
  • Fur Blankets of various colors
  • Soft pillows
  • Bean bags
  • Wide aperture lenses
  • Macro Lens
  • Big blankets for background
  • Baskets or crates etc

#Tip3: Capture the Details
Baby’s are very small. While shooting, make sure to shoot all the details of the baby. Make use of the macro lens. A 50mm f2.8 is used most of the times for newborn photography as it gives good shallow depth of field, focusing on the details of the baby.

#Tip4: Involve Family and Siblings
A newborn baby photoshoot is incomplete if you do not involve the family. Try to take beautiful shots of mother and baby relationship, mother feeding the baby and ofcourse a complete family portrait. Try taking individual shots with the siblings. Trust me, these kind of shots come out to be really beautiful and are loved by the family members.

#Tip5: Post Processing
Since babies are really small and their skin needs a lot of post processing that needs to be done very carefully. You should be good working with Photoshop as well as lightroom. Post-processing would take a lot of time while working with newborn pictures, but you need to be patient. After all what matters is the end result and you are going to love the shots taken.
